Add your waste to the lawn area: 2,000 sq ft plus 5% is 2,100 sq ft to order. Divide by what one roll or slab covers for the piece count (2,100 ÷ 10 = 210), and by what one pallet covers for pallets (2,100 ÷ 450 = 4.67).
The last line rounds up to whole pallets, for farms that only sell full ones. If yours sells partial pallets, order the exact figure.

What to watch for
- Use the farm's numbers. Roll size, slab size and pallet coverage are set by the farm and the grass. Don't carry last job's numbers to a new supplier.
- Odd shapes. Split the lawn into rectangles and triangles (half of base x height), add them up, and enter the total.
- Take out what isn't lawn. Beds, patios and walks inside the measured area come off before you add waste.
- Sod won't wait. Order it for the day it goes down, and get the prep done before the truck shows up.
Questions contractors ask
How many square feet of sod are on a pallet?
It varies by farm and by grass, so it's an input here. Ask when you order and put their number in.
How much extra sod should I order?
Your call. Curvy beds, trees and lots of edges mean more cutting. A plain rectangle wastes very little.
Can I use this for seed?
Only the area part. Seed is sold by weight at a rate per 1,000 sq ft that the seed company prints on the bag.
