An AI assistant for contractors, minus the hype.
Plenty of AI tools will write you a Facebook post. The useful question is which parts of running a trade business you can hand to an AI assistant today, which you can't, and how to tell the difference before you pay for anything.
The difference between a chatbot and an assistant
If you've pasted a customer's message into a general chatbot to get a polite reply, you've seen the limit: it doesn't know who the customer is, what you quoted them or when you're free. You still do all the copying back and forth.
An assistant that's useful in a trade business has to work from your real records. Redline's chat reads your live contacts, jobs, calendar and recent activity, and it acts on them: it adds the lead, finds the time, drafts the quote or invoice, and answers "who owes me?" from your actual open invoices. That's the whole idea of chat-first field service software. The chat is the app, and the screens sit behind it.
Two things worth handing off
Draft quote for Kevin Dunn, water heater replacement:
50 gal atmospheric gas heater, installed: $1,950
Permit: $125
Haul-away of the old tank: $75
Total $2,150, with a 30% deposit ($645) like your last install.
Save it as a draft?
Saved. You have 3 open invoices, $4,180 in all. Ruiz is the one to call: $1,240, sent 9 days ago and flagged overdue.
Quotes save as drafts and nothing sends them for you. Invoices and "who owes me" need Solo or higher.
Hand it off, or keep it
A fair split for a small trade business, based on what Redline's chat actually does today.
| Task | Hand it to the chat? | What you still do |
|---|---|---|
| Logging calls, notes and payments | Yes. It files them on the right customer right away. | Tell it what happened. |
| Finding a time for an estimate | Yes. Up to 3 open slots, grouped with visits in the same town. | Pick one. |
| Building a quote from site photos | Yes. Up to 6 photos per message, saved as a draft. | Check the numbers before anyone sees them. |
| Writing a follow-up email | Yes. It drafts in your voice. | Approve it; it sends from your own Gmail. |
| Invoicing a finished job | Yes, on Solo and up. | Approve the draft so the pay link goes live. |
| Knowing who owes you | Yes, from your open invoices (Solo and up). | Make the call. |
| Looking up material prices or permit rules | Yes. It searches the web. | Confirm with your supplier or the town. |
| Answering the phone | No. | You, or a person you hire. |
| Talking to customers | No. Redline doesn't text and never contacts customers on its own. | Every message to a customer goes out because you approved it. |
| Setting your prices | It remembers the ones you tell it. | Decide what the work is worth. |
What happens right away, and what waits for you
Some things the chat does on the spot: logging a call or note, booking or moving a calendar visit, setting a reminder, saving a fact to memory, and on Team and up, assigning a job to a tech. Those are low-risk and easy to undo.
Anything that changes a customer's record or could reach a customer is a proposal you confirm: adding, editing or deleting contacts and jobs, and drafting emails, quotes and invoices. You see the draft, you tap approve, then it happens.
The parts that make it useful, and their limits
It remembers your prices
Mention your diagnostic fee or your maintenance package once and it saves it on its own, with an Undo. Edit or turn memory off in Settings. It never saves passwords or card numbers. See memory.
It reads photos
Attach up to 6 images per message (JPEG, PNG, GIF or WebP) and it uses them to build the quote. See quotes and estimates.
It searches the web
Up to 4 searches per question for material prices, codes, permits or the weather. Searches use credits.
Talk instead of type, sometimes
The mic button uses your browser's speech-to-text, in English, and only where the browser supports it (Chrome and Edge do). It isn't hands-free voice control.
It runs on credits
Free has 4,000 for the life of the account. Solo gets 13,200 a month, Team 50,000 and Team+ 300,000. You can't buy more; when they run out the chat pauses until the next cycle or an upgrade.
Straight answers before you trust it with the office
Redline's AI does
- Work from your live contacts, jobs and calendar
- Add leads, book visits and log calls from one message
- Draft quotes, invoices and emails for you to check
- Tell you who owes you and which quotes went quiet
- Remember your prices, packages and service area
Redline's AI doesn't
- Answer calls or act as a receptionist
- Text anyone, or book customers by phone or text
- Contact a customer without your approval
- Send quotes for customers to accept online
- Run without limits; credits are finite on every plan
Questions contractors ask
Will the AI make up prices?
It works from the prices you've told it and from what it finds when it searches. That's why every quote and invoice is a draft you check before it's saved or sent.
Can it answer my phone or reply to texts?
No. Redline doesn't answer calls and doesn't text. If missed calls are your problem, a person or an answering service is the fix. See virtual assistant for contractors for a fair comparison.
Does it work in Spanish?
The app and voice dictation are English only today.
What does it cost to try?
Nothing. The Free plan includes the chat with a lifetime allowance of 4,000 credits, for one person. Invoicing starts on Solo at $29 a month. See pricing.
Where's the full feature list?
On the AI chat assistant page, including every kind of request the chat handles.
See it in your trade
Give it one real job and see.
Start on Free, send it a photo from your next estimate, and check the draft it builds.
